Fertilizers

Fertilizers

Fertilizers are substances containing one or more essential plant nutrients, applied to soil or plants to promote growth, improve yield, and maintain soil fertility. They play a critical role in modern agriculture by replenishing nutrients removed during crop production.

Fertilizers are broadly classified into organic fertilizers, inorganic (chemical) fertilizers, and biofertilizers

Inorganic fertilizers supply nutrients such as Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) in readily available forms.

• Organic fertilizers improve soil structure and microbial activity while providing macro- and micronutrients.

• Bio-fertilizers contain beneficial microorganisms that enhance nutrient availability and uptake.

Quality and effectiveness of fertilizers depend on parameters such as nutrient content, moisture, particle size, solubility, pH, and absence of harmful contaminants like heavy metals. Fertilizers must comply with applicable regulatory standards, including the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO) and relevant Indian and international specifications.

Laboratory testing of fertilizers involves the determination of total and available nutrients, secondary and micronutrients, organic carbon, moisture, and contaminants, using validated analytical methods. Accurate testing ensures product conformity, agronomic efficiency, environmental safety, and regulatory compliance.
